Recent flood mitigation work in Alaska’s Mendenhall Valley illustrates the problem clearly. After repeated glacier lake outburst floods threatened homes and community infrastructure, temporary modular barriers were installed along vulnerable sections of the riverbank while longer-term flood solutions continued to be developed.

The protection system was not treated as a one-time installation. After later flood events provided new information about water levels and affected areas, parts of the barrier system were raised and reinforced, while additional sections were planned for previously unprotected areas.
