Where Gabion Walls Fit on a Project
Gabion walls are gravity structures, not reinforced-earth walls, which is why a 4 m tall retaining wall built with welded gabion baskets can stand for decades without geogrid or tie-backs. The mass of the stone, the permeability of the fill, and the wire mesh doing the tensile work are the entire system. Get those three right and the wall needs almost no maintenance.

Step 1: Foundation and Subgrade
Excavate to a depth equal to 10% of the wall height (typically 300–500 mm). Compact the subgrade to 95% modified Proctor. Lay a 100–150 mm crushed stone leveling pad and screed it true. A 50 mm deviation over 10 m is the maximum tolerance — gabion walls do not forgive high spots because the basket sits flat.
Place a non-woven geotextile (200–300 g/m²) between the subgrade and the leveling pad to prevent fines migration. For walls over 3 m, add a 100 mm perforated drain tile at the heel.
Step 2: Assembly
Unfold the gabion panels on a hard, flat surface away from the placement line. Lift the sides, ends, and diaphragms upright. Tie corners with the lacing wire, alternating single and double loops every 100–150 mm. Do not stretch the mesh during assembly — the panels are sized so the wire is under zero stress when empty.

Step 3: Stone Filling
Fill in lifts of 330 mm (one-third of the basket height). Hand-place the front face stones so their flat side faces outward. Drop filler stone into the middle. The 75–200 mm grading gives the densest packing and the best visual texture. For tighter stone retention on visible walls, spec JOESCO gabion mesh with a 75 mm aperture.
Overfill each lift by 25–50 mm so the next lift settles into a slight crown. After every two lifts, install two cross-tie wires across the basket to stop the panels bulging under fill pressure. Without cross-ties, the front face bows out 80–120 mm and stays that way.
Step 4: Capping and Lid Closure
Once the basket is filled to within 25–50 mm of the top, stretch a tension wire along the diagonal of the lid and lace the lid down. Use a lid tool or pry bar to pull the lid tight against the stones. The lid must sit flush; an open lip invites vandalism and lets fines wash out.
For multi-tier walls, set the second course back by the batter ratio specified for the design (typically 100 mm per 1 m of height). Each course is independent of the one below; do not lace courses together except where the design specifies structural continuity.
QA and Common Failures
- Bulging faces: missing cross-ties; install them during filling, not after
- Wall leans forward: subgrade not level or insufficient batter; rebuild the base
- Stone loss through mesh: stone is undersized; grading must be 1.5× the mesh aperture
- Wire corrosion early: coating was scratched during assembly; touch up with zinc-rich paint

How long does a 100 m² wall take to take?
A trained crew of four with two machines installs about 8–12 m² per day, end-to-end. Plan 10 working days for a 100 m² single-tier wall including foundation work.
What stone size should I use?
For 75×75 mm mesh, use 100–200 mm graded angular stone. For 100×100 mm mesh, use 125–250 mm. Rounded river stone looks nice but packs less densely and shifts over time.
Do gabion walls need a concrete foundation?
No. A compacted crushed stone pad is enough for most residential and light-commercial walls. For highway and railway walls, an engineer may specify a lean concrete footing.
Can gabions be built in water?

How tall can a single-tier gabion wall be?
