Explosion Proof Perimeter Wall for Oil and Gas Facilities – Best Safety Barriers

Industrial safety starts with prevention. Deploying an explosion proof perimeter wall for oil and gas facilities is the most reliable way to guard critical infrastructure and preserve human lives during accidental thermal incidents.

Case Overview

In industrial zones like the Rotterdam port area in the Netherlands, petrochemical refineries operate around the clock near municipal borders.  Our client needed a scalable, practical barrier system to segment high-risk storage areas from daily operational offices.

The Challenge

Refineries and LNG terminals handle volatile hydrocarbons daily. Standard concrete walls are costly, difficult to relocate, and can turn into hazardous flying shrapnel during a blast.

Basic Engineering Solution

We delivered modular sand-filled defensive barriers to build a full perimeter enclosure for the high-pressure gas storage area. With a multi-cell structure, these barriers mitigate blast shockwaves relying on compacted local sand and soil.

  • Base Width: 1.5–2.1m
  • Standard Wall Height: 2.4–3.0m
  • Wire Mesh: 4.0mm thick hot-dip galvanized steel
  • Geotextile Liner: 300g/m² non-woven polypropylene
  • Blast Resistance: Withstands 0.5–1.0 Bar blast overpressure

Different Solution Scenarios

1.Main Perimeter Protection (External Wall)
A 3-meter tall continuous barrier setup installed along the refinery boundary line.
It serves a dual purpose: preventing unauthorized vehicle intrusion and acts as an exterior blast barrier to safeguard the public outside the facility.

2.Internal Buffer Zoning (Compartmentalization)
A 2.4-meter tall internal barrier system placed between the gas tank farm and the administrative office building.
This layout ensures that if an incident occurs in the storage area, the shockwave is suppressed, allowing office employees to evacuate safely without facing direct heat radiation.

Why It Is Practical for Everyday Facilities

Many plant managers believe that blast protection requires multimillion-dollar concrete infrastructure. This project proves otherwise. Our welded wire gabion walls are delivered flat on pallets, expanded easily, and filled using local sand or gravel. It integrates naturally into routine facility upgrades, offering premium protection at an optimized cost for everyday energy production.
